But with the increasingly ever changing technology and the emergence of different types of fields in radiology, the question is how much studying is involved to become an X-ray technician. Traditionally x-ray technicians were in a solely role of taking x-rays but their roles have expanded to include radiation therapy, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), ultrasounds and many more. Becoming an x-ray technician is very simple and faster but considering the amount of studying involved to become one is basically another matter. Becoming an x-ray technician starts way when you are in high school. As a field of medicine it requires a good understanding and performance in math and chemistry, biology and other sciences. Then after high school you will require to take a college education in radiologic technologist or other relevant programs. As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the United States of America, becoming an x-ray technician varies from one state to another, but mostly commonly what is required is a basic college certification. An associate or a bachelors degree programs are the most prevalent ones in becoming an x-ray technician. Students will have to learn anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and imaging, patient care plus the working ethics. Learning to protect patients, themselves and co workers from radiation is another matter. These programs mostly take between two years for associate degrees and three to four years for a bachelor’s degree involving academic classroom work and clinical wok. Each of the programs will have to be accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Radiologic Technology.
Certification and Licensing
After finishing the educational requirements for x-ray technicians the last part is on certification and licensing. To be certified and registered one will have to take an examination presented by the American Registry of Radiologic technologists. The examinations will identify that an x-ray technician meets the educational and the ethical standards required. At the same time certification involves one year training on those who wish to major in other radiology areas including CT, MRI and radiology therapy. An examination is involves in each of the areas to ascertain educational and ethical standards adherence. Registration is being renewed annually to signify the continued compliance on the educational and ethical standards set down.
